Who is Lady Libra?
Sailorlibra is a mysterious Senshi to the Zodiac Senshi as she was never reborn on Earth and thus only two of the Zodiac Senshi remember her during the Golden Millennium.
Libra was born in Tenavinhja (now called 'Tenbinza' by those who no longer speak Ancient Tongue) to a noble family, one of many that could theoretically be elected to rule the entire union of stars. She was known to be talkative, flirtacious, and quick-witted with a high sense of honor and justice. She was also a bit lazy, egocentric, and rather elitist...and regarded as the best swordsmistress in the Golden Millennium. As a young girl, her amazing fencing talents became obvious and she quickly outgrew all teachers. She practiced fencing daily and once declared that whoever beat her at fencing could marry her, many came and none won.
Her mother, Astraeia, was less than amused at her daughter's mockery of the marriage system and also fearful that her daughter would be victim to hubris and have to get married to someone loathesome (and as much as Astraeia disapproved of her daughter's arrogant nature, she certainly didn't want her to get what she may or may not have deserved). As one of the representatives of Tenbinza to Queen Selestia's court, Astraeia was able to bring Libra to the Golden City. With her incredible swordsmanship and quick-wit, she was easily chosen to become a Sailor Soldier, it was even rumored that she would one day become the Avatar of Caelestis Lucina. Sailorlibra was quickly promoted to leader of the Zodiac Senshi, a concept which she always remembered and never seemed to stop reminding people of. Nonetheless, she was generally liked (or at least tolerated) by the rest of the Zodiac Senshi due to her wit and easy-going nature. She had a particular friendship with Sailorscorpio, but often clashed with Sailorleo.
Sailorlibra was also given the task of punishing criminals. It was said that she often lectured or taunted her victims before using the Justice Sword. Though Sailorlibra had no "attacks" so to speak, she was an extremely powerful Senshi who was bestowed many gifts by the gods, not simply the Justice Sword.
The following is a SPOILER! Do NOT read until you've finished the series! Go down to Attacks and Powers. :)
Libra was the keeper of many secrets. It is not truly known how she managed to escape from the Golden Millennium, despite the fact that all signs pointed to the idea that she died. Nonetheless, she rescued Princess Stella and Princess Solana from the Golden Millennium and brought them to the Aurora Galaxy. After realizing what her destiny and fate was, she left the Justice Star upon the cold, dead, Moon of Earth to be found at a later date (during the Silver Millennium.) With the loss of the Justice Star, the powerless Libra returned to Star to protect Stella and Solana where she watched Earth intently waiting for the day when her friends would be reborn, as was said by Oracles. Using the last remains of her power, she aided two Senshi in discovering their identities when they were young. After that, she aged quickly. when she learned that she heard of "The Night of Falling Stars" she became despondent at the realization her years of waiting and being reunited with her friends were for nothing. After realizing that at her weakened state she would not be able to fully protect Princess Stella, Libra sacrificed herself to help create the Star Senshi.
Attacks & Powers
Libra Cosmic Star Power, Make Up
Libra shouts this and raises her henshin wand into the air. A white shining star trailed by translucent streamers flies out from the top of the wand and revolves around her starting from her head and ending at her feet. The streamers wrap around her body forming her uniform. The star itself then rests on her chest and her bow and collar grow from it. A circular halo appears around her and travels down her body forming her collar, skirt, and boots.
Justice Star Deliverance
Sailorlibra raises her sword to the sky and chants the words "Justice Star Deliverance.." The sword will then judge the fate of the victim. If the victim is unpure, then the sword will emit a powerful burst of energy which will destroy the victim at once. If the victim is pure, then Fate will not allow the sword to harm them. This is Libra's only true "magical" attack.
The Justice Star
This is a long sword said to be a gift from the goddess Caelestis Lucina. The hilt is bedecked with jewels; the blade is made of some sort of impenetrable, unbreakable stone and has a prayer of protection etched on it in Ancient Tongue. The Justice Star cannot be used by anyone else except Sailorlibra. It is rumoured that those who are impure and touch it will be destroyed instantly.
Author's Comments
When I started SMZ, it was sort of a joke between me and my friends. Sailorlibra was meant to be me. I took some of my qualities and put them into Libra (elitism, laziness, creativity, flirtaciousness) and these also happen to be pretty stereotypical Libran qualities anyways. Actually, I'm almost completely a stereotypical Libra. Bleh. =P But I digress...
Her entire uniform is black because I wanted it to be that way. I added the blue stripe to recognize that I knew her color was meant to be blue. Her hair, well, I asked a friend to make "messy, short, black hair" and her current hairstyle is what I got. I think it fits her quite well. Her relationship with Scorpio is interesting, since, coincidentally Libra used to be considered the Claws of Scorpio by ancient Greeks. Very interesting. ^_~
Even back in 1995, I was afraid someone would accuse me of writing myself into a story (and I wanted to be fair to my friends who were also in the story). I decided to rectify it by balancing her power with giving her practically no "screen-time." I figure the same thing goes in Sailormoon, so its fitting. I mean, Sailorpluto and Sailorsaturn were easily the most powerful and interesting characters--and they completely got the shaft when it came to "screen-time." That being said, some people would accuse Sailorlibra of being a "Mary Sue," well...if the only qualification for that is a character based on myself, well, I guess she is. But I think a great many, many authors write themselves into characters--and other characters have qualities of myself in them too. Now, I take a "Mary Sue" not only to be a self-insertion, but some sort of obnoxious fantasy version that can do no wrong and is perfect in everyway. Libra is far from perfect, as I am far from perfect. I took my negative qualities more than my positive qualities and stuck them into Libra. Actually, very few of my positive qualites are in Sailorlibra =P I'm quite known for my objectivity and honesty, and trust me, I knew what I was doing when I wrote Libra as a lazy, long-winded, know-it-all. ^_~ Besides, I don't relate to her in anyway and I certainly don't live vicariously through the character. I find my life interesting enough than to need to write myself into a story. She's just a character with personality qualities based on me, therefore will often act like me. But as I am not a fencer a long, long, time ago, in a galaxy, far, far away she and I will certainly act differently. I sure as hell wouldn't have become a Sailor Senshi if I were Libra. Give me my palaces and jewels any day =P
Amusingly enough, the character that would probably get criticized the most as being a self-insertion is not my favorite character, nor my favorite character to write. In the SMMT RPG, I was bored to death playing a human-reborn Sailorlibra. I don't know how anyone finds it fun to write a character that acts like themselves. I'm probably just really boring, but I much prefer to write as characters that are extremely different from myself. Besides... I don't think Libra's a very interesting character, if you take away the sword part. If I were gunna make a self insertion "Mary Sue" character, then she'd be MUCH much cooler. ;)
