Who is Natalia Koorino?
Natalia Koorino was born to a Russian model mother (Maria Nikolova) and a Japanese magazine photographer. From a young age, she always wanted to be like her mother and that chance came when she was discovered at a school festival by a talent scout when she was 16. Since then, "Niko-chan" (a nickname created to honor her mother) has been the rising star of the Japanese pop music scene. Thanks to a brilliant marketing campaign and media blitz, she became very successful and very popular in a short amount of time. Niko-chan has an angelic reputation and is known for cutely bouncing around on stage in fluffy skirts while just being the slightest hint of flirtacious. She is looked upon by millions of young girls as the perfect role model, the perfect Japanese girl--cute, sweet, and naive.
However, truthfully, Natalia greatly dislikes the persona she has to play for the public. Although she loves the fanfare, she regrets agreeing to play a fake role for fame. While she adores her fans, she wishes they liked her for who she really was. However, she knows that her real self is far more scandalous than "Niko-chan" and would not be well accepted by the Japanese public, at least, not from where she currently is. As a result, Natalia keeps her true personality hidden and only shows it to her friends, family, and managers. Someday she hopes that her fans will be able to accept her for who she really is and she can make the type of music that she wants to make. She also wishes that critics and such would respect her as a singer, and not just see her as an idol who'll be forgotten in a few years time.
The real Natalia is a bit shallow, and can be two faced (perhaps the result of being in the entertainment business.) She loves attention and she loves spotlight, she's a natural entertainer. Unfortunately, she has very little self-control when it comes to things that give her pleasure. She is often easily tempted, especially because she has to keep her feelings bottled inside. She will latch on to anyone who seems trust-worthy and a potential partner in crime.
As Sailorgemini, Natalia is quite powerful, with a strong offensive attack and a dizzying defensive attack. She loves to be in the spotlight, so she is often first to attack. She also has a special ability of having amazing speed which makes it difficult for enemies to attack her.
Attacks & Powers
Gemini Cosmic Star Power, Make Up
Natalia raises her silver and blue henshin wand to the sky and from the ground appears two braiding beams of light and energy, one silver and one blue. They braid above her head like a helix as she spins. The ribbons then wrap around her arms to form her gloves and around her body to form her fuku, then around her legs to form her boots. As she spins the remaining ribbons of light wrap around her waist to form her skirt. She poses standing with her hands behind her back.
Double Ice Freeze
This is Sailorgemini's offensive attack. She raises both of her hands to the sky and on her left arm a silver band appears and on her right a blue one. The ribbons spin around her arms then shoot forward, the silver ribbon becomes freezing ice and the blue becomes freezing water
Mind Split
Sailorgemini says this to confuse her enemies. It causes the enemy to see two of everything, causing the headaches and confusion one might expect from seeing two of everything.
Author's Comments
The original Natalia was named Natalia Draven. The choice for this was simply because I loved both names. She was completely different than she is now--her claim to fame? Hacking computers. However, when I rewrote the series I decided to do something far more interesting with her. I decided to focus on the duality that a Gemini might have. Multiple personality disorder sounded like a possibility, but I decided on something much more mundane: why not make her a pop star?
However, the inspiration for Natalia was NOT a pop star like Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, but Japanese pop stars. At the time I was particularly thinking of Hirosue Ryoko and Amuro Namie. Hirosue Ryoko was discovered in a contest, but that lead to modelling, singing, and then later acting in not only Japanese television dramas but also later international movie fame. She was obnoxiously cute and managed to turn that lucky break into something successful. Amuro Namie was even bigger--her success completely changed the look for young Japanese women. You can thank her for the fact that darker skinned or tanned Japanese girls are now seen as sexy, and hell, a look to actually attain. However, a scandal (she got pregnant) lead to a complete crash in her popularity. She's big again now, but not like she was before. The moral of the story? Idols in Japan can become very big very fast--though they usually don't have critical acclaim. But they also can disappear very quickly, especially in the light of a scandal. Scandal in Japan means very different than scandal in America. Idols are supposed to be pure and absolutely, positively scandal free. I'm not talking Britney Spears "fake" pseudo-virginity either, I'm talking dancing with fluffy teddy bears on stage pure. Please note, I am talking about "idols," not about actual artists or singers. Idols in Japan don't actually need to be talented and are not really taken very seriously. Some idols have no talents beyond having large breasts.
I've always wondered how the hell some of these girls could handle it. Hamasaki Ayumi says the high squeaky voice she talks in is part of her act (her real voice is much lower), and I'm sure not all the girls enjoy having their "stupidity" laughed at on national television. In making Gemini, I wanted to sort of explore the mindset of a normal (albeit hedonistic) girl who was trapped playing a sugar plum fairy, well, explore in the limited time I have in the fanfic.
